Characteristics and application of lavender oil
The lavender is of Lavandula genus, Lamiaceae family. In our country cultivated is only lavender of the type Lavandula vera D.C.
From lavender produced is essential oil through steam distillation of fresh blossoms.
The lavender oil is easily movable, transparent, light yellow liquid with characteristic for the blossom aroma. Lavender oil consists of about 74% terpene-oxygen compounds, about 16% terpene-hydrocarbons and about 10% of sesquiterpene and polymers. Main ingredients are linalyl acetate and linalool. The most valuable ester is the linalyl acetate which depending on the soil and climate conditions varies between 30% and 60%. The contents of linalool vary between 28% and 46%. Essential lavender oil consists of α-terpineol, limonene, ß-mircene, ß-ocimene, 1,8-cineol, geraniol, borneol etc.
The lavender oil has strong antiseptic effect and has a calming effect. It is widely used in perfumery and cosmetics, in the production of paints, varnishes and others.
